GREAT AUNT GLADYS LINDERMAN NELSON, EVELYN “EPPIE” LINDERMAN AYALA, AND ARTURO AYALA WENT TO NORWAY ON VACATION IN 1994, AND MET SOME OF OUR “LUND” RELATIVES STILL RESIDING THERE.

THE “LUND” SURNAME IS NORWEGIAN. THE NORWEGIANS USUALLY DERIVED THEIR NAMES FROM THE FAMILY FARM.

Emigrated in September 1896 from Namsos, Norway to New York. ELLIS ISLAND IN NEW YORK WAS OPENED IN 1892. GUDRON LUND WAS ONLY FIFTEEN YEARS OF AGE, WHEN SHE EMIGRATED FROM NORWAY, IN 1896, TO ELLIS ISLAND, NEW YORK, ON THE SHIP “HEKLA”, WITH CAPTAIN LAUB OF COPENHAGEN. THINGVALLA IS THE SHIPBUILDER. SHE CAME TO WORK AS A SERVANT FOR THE GLENN W. TRAER FAMILY IN HYDE PARK TOWN, CHICAGO, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS.

Married Edward Francis Linderman on September 11, 1902 in Winona, Minnesota. Edy called her Gud.

They had four children together: Harry William, Gladys Serene, Irene Mary, and Evelyn “Eppie” Frances Linderman.

All children were baptized as Lutheran. Harry & Gladys were baptized in Winona, Minnesota. Irene & Evelyn were baptized in the St.Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 2025 Jackson Street, in Dubuque, Iowa.

Edy, Gud, and (mother-in-law) Mary Linderman all resided together at 705 W. Third Street, Dubuque, Iowa until her death in 1924. Gudrun had Gall Bladder surgery, and died when a blood clot went to her brain.

My Great Grandfather, Edward Francis Linderman never remarried and continued to grieve her loss until the day he died in 1968. His Mother, Mary Linderman, died one month later in June 1968. What a tragedy!

My Maternal Great Grandmother’s parents were John Theodor Lund and Georgine Johanne (Jansen) Lund of Bergen, Hordaland, Norway. They RESIDED AT FOSWINCHELSGADE 4, BERGEN, NORWAY for the 1900 Census. John and Georgine Lund had five children : Ragnhild, Elsiff, John, Solveig, and Gudrun Lund

My maternal great grandmother. Gudrun emigrated from Kristiana, Kristiansand, Akershus, Norway in 1896 to Ellis Island, New York. SHE CAME TO AMERICA, TO ELLIS ISLAND, NEW YORK, TO BE A GOVERNESS FOR THE FAMILY OF THE BROTHER OF THE CEO OF THE MORTON SALT COMPANY. She worked in Hyde Park Town, Chicago, Cook, Illinois from 1896-1900.

She married Edward Francis Linderman on September 11, 1902 in Winona, Minnesota. Edy called her Gud. They had four children together: Harry “Billy” William, Gladys Serene, Irene Mary, and Evelyn “Eppie” Frances Linderman. All children were baptized as Lutheran. Harry & Gladys were baptized in Winona, Minnesota. Irene & Evelyn were baptized in the Saint Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 2025 Jackson Street, in Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa.

Edy, Gud, and (mother-in-law) Mary Linderman all resided together at 705 W. Third Street, Dubuque, Iowa until her death in 1924. Gudrun had Gallbladder surgery, and then died when a blood clot went to her brain. It was in the days before they started using elastic stockings to prevent blood clots.

My Great Grandfather, Edward Francis “Edy” Linderman never remarried and continued to grieve her loss until the day he died in 1968. According to my mother, he did have a red-headed girlfriend, but he did not remarry. He wanted to be there for his children.

Aunt Gladys moved in with him in 1941 when she separated from her husband. She took care of her father, E.F. Linderman up until his death in 1968. His Mother, Mary Linderman, died one month later in June 1968. What a tragedy!

My mother, Jean Mancill, told me that Gudrun was born in Namsos, Norway, but Gudrun’s death certificate states that her parents were Olaus Lunk and Serene Olson. But…In Census records it lists her parents as John Eilert Theodorsen and Georgine Johanne Janson. The Census records state that she was born in Bergen, Bergen, Hordaland, Norway. I have not been able to locate any records. (10 March 2017)

Gudrun emigrated on 11 November 1896, at the age of 15. I cannot fathom how brave she must have been or maybe just how desperate she was. To board a ship and leave her homeland during the dead of winter. She must have been a very strong woman. I never got the privilege of knowing her, because she passed away years before I was born. Gudrun passed away after gall bladder surgery when a blood clot when to her brain. in those days they did not use stockings to protect against blood clots.

She emigrated as a servant to the Glenn W. Traer family in Hyde Park, Chicago, Illinois. My mother told me that she came as a governess.
