Bergen City in Norway. Bergen is a city on Norway’s southwestern coast. It’s surrounded by mountains and fjords, including Sognefjord, the country’s longest and deepest. Bryggen features colorful wooden houses on the old wharf, once a center of the Hanseatic League’s trading empire. The Fløibanen Funicular goes up Fløyen Mountain for panoramic views and hiking trails. The Edvard Grieg House is where the renowned composer once lived.
My Maternal Second Great Grandparents, John Theodor Lund and Georgine Johanne Jansen, were married in the Domkirken (Bergen Cathedral), Evangelical Lutheran religion, of the Church of Norway, Bergen, Hordaland, Norway on 21 October 1870. John was born on 9 October 1842 in Bergen, Hordaland, Norway. Georgine was born on 25 October 1837 in Bergen, Hordaland, Norway.
In July I will be leaving for a month-long trip to Croatia and Italy, but until then I won’t have some new pictures to share. Instead, I’ll keep posting photos from my travels last year. Today I’ve got some more pictures from Scandinavia that I feel should be shared. Enjoy!

There is a lot more to Norway than men with beards and bloody axes but the Disney Website simply introduces Norway with the words “Welcome to the land of the Vikings!”
Whilst it suits Disney to retain the school boy image of them it actually becomes increasingly evident that Viking society was much more complex and popular conceptions of them are often in conflict with the truth that emerges from recent archaeology and modern research.
The traditional view of the Vikings as violent brutes and intrepid adventurers are part true and part fable but no one can be absolutely certain of the accurate ratio and popular representations of these men in horned helmets remain for now highly clichéd. Disney of course had a Wooden Longboat (its gone now I understand) and a shop that inevitably sold Viking helmets based on the traditional image of the plundering Norsemen.
This blog is about my Norwegian and Swedish roots. My ancestors and descendants of my maternal great grandparents were John Theodor Lund and Georgine Johanne Jansen of Domkirken, Bergen, Hordaland, Norway.
